About the Exhibition
The Messengers from the Mantle: Diamonds and Craton Roots exhibition features specimens from the “Mantle Room” research collection at the University of Cape Town, which is one of the most extensive collection of deep Earth samples in the world.
Kimberlite Research Group
The First International Kimberlite Conference held at the University of Cape Town in 1973, generated enthusiasm and ideas that led directly to the formation of the Kimberlite Research Group (KRG) at UCT headed by Prof. John Gurney.
The Mantle Room
The University of Cape Town (UCT) houses a unique collection of mantle and deep crustal materials (including mantle xenoliths, xenocrysts, megacrysts, as well as kimberlites and related rocks), that is most likely the largest of its kind in the world.
